Review

Very fun. Had been meaning to read at least some of thes Vampire Chronicles books for a long time. I love the film and have been interested in watching the show at some point. (Normally I don't care about adaptations, but I knew the books were well-regarded, I love the film, and if the show is also consistently getting good reviews there's clearly something here.) So I felt it correct that I should experience some of the original before potentially doing the show. Otherwise, I'd just be comparing to the film. And neither might be similar to the books!

I enjoy the interiority of Louis' narration. It's something that didn't quite come across in the film (though understandably difficult to do so). The prose is floating and meandering, but rich with detail. I find myself well drawn in, as the journalist character is, to his story. Reminds me a little bit of a Donna Tartt or a Mary Renault (though not as verbose). The tragedy of Interview is how inevitable its conclusions are. Louis's disposition after Paris is exactly as you imagine it will be. His nature assures it. His final conversation with Armand...

I find it rather interesting that Rice chooses to make Lestat the main character of the next book (and I think perhaps the overall series?). Don't recall a case where anyone takes their villain (if you can really call him that. I know it's not really accurate but I think you know what I'm getting at.) and immediately turns around and tells things from their perspective. These vampires are quite interesting and I would like to read more.
