Halloween (2018)

Review

Can I be vulnerable? Can I be real? I think I liked this more than Halloween (1978). The first one was very fine to me. Very okay. It was well-made, but so basic and everything it did was so in-the-water, that I felt like there was less to be gleaned coming back to it with modern eyes. 2018 was such a fun followup. I loved the idea of seeing what would happen to one of these slasher film survivors. How of course it would fuck you up. Fun performance from Curtis giving us that.

There was a consistent thing happening in this film that became predictable but even knowing that, it was so well-done that it just worked on me. All the randos that Michael done did get were really likable. We would see these less than 5 minute vignettes where we're introduced to someone, see them go through a little mini arc, and then see them dispatched. The kid with his dad in the truck when they come upon the overturned prison bus. The two cops talking about their dinners and their friendly bantering. They're just so immediately likable that I dread their demises, even though I know it's coming. It's really good!

The music was also highly enjoyable. Loved Carpenter's extra little flourishes put onto the music that returned from the original.
