Halloween (1978)
Review
I feel a bit so-so on Halloween. The music is great (shocker) and I have such an overflowing love for the holiday of Halloween that I do find myself enjoying just about anything to do with it. But I felt the movie occupied a slightly awkward middle space between horror and camp. The action feels like it's in this down-to-Earth not overly-stylized way that makes it more realistic. (And thus, perhaps, spookier?) But at the same time, we are doing a slasher. In face, we are defining a slasher. So to say that what we are seeing is not in some way elevated would be silly. Lotta knife action going-on, you know? I mostly just give it a pass with the knowledge that, as I said, we're defining the thing that scores of films would go on to ape. Bit of the Seinfeld effect happening.
I did certainly enjoy the camerawork. I like how even when Myers is not present, we keep holding shots longer than you would expect them to. Gives a nice eerie sense of being observed. Certainly intentional, and it's quite good.
Jamie Lee Curtis was enjoyable. I feel she doesn't really get that much to do. If you really break down the movie, she drives and walks a bit. Then she does some babysitting before the event happens. Would like if there was a little more incidence there. But she feels like she has at least some layers to her with the personality we do see.
I do also like the masked man.
