Evil Dead II (1987)

Review

Such a strange setup., I don't think I've ever seen a case where, with a sequel, we just remake the setup of the first one. Could tell things were gonna go off he rails though when we've effectively retold the whole story of the first movie in about 15 minutes. An odd choice, but goddamn... Hooting. Hollering. Clapping like a circus seal. So fucking good. I could watch Bruce Campbell do a one-man stageplay fighting his own hand for 16 hours straight and would not get tired of it. My face was hurting by the end of Evil Dead 2 from how much I was smiling.

The reverential tone we spoke in when the chainsaw was happening. "He's becoming..." Genuinely smiling ear to ear. Ash rocketed up into the pantheon of greats with this one. He was real dipshit in the first one. Which is fine! Because it only made his trajectory more satisfying when he became the hero we needed. But by the end of this film, he started becoming an elemental force. The statue was always within the slab of marble. We merely needed to discover it.
