Halloween Kills (2021)
Review
Hmm..........I'm mixed. This feels like a film I was enjoying in the moment, but the more thought I put to it, the less I enjoy it. Never a good sign. I would say firstly that it's very clear we are killing time. We did not need 3 new movies. If we need to have more movies made, I would have just considered the first movie to be the first in this trilogy. Combine Halloween Kills with whatever happens in Halloween Ends.
Like what did Jamie Lee Curtis do this film? Well, she laid in a bed. Eventually she dramatically stabbed herself with a full vial of morphine (not how that works) like she's imbibing in the Old Blood and she's got some hunting to do. And then she...continues to sit around the hospital. I guess because there's a Rat-King about.
I would also say, Michael is getting very powerful, not really even stalking people anymore. Isn't that one of the whole complaints of the series, that he just became Jason in the sequels? We start Kills with him dispatching a whole squad of firemen. These are well-fit lads...I also don't have a clue why they would go into the devil's den. The fire was completely consuming the house. There's no world where they wouldn't have just contained the spread and let it burn itself out. There was a lot of weird little inconsistencies like that that I either noticed but moved past while watching or noticed when ruminating on it later.
An additional complaint I have is I loathed the flashbacks. Delete all of them. Tired of this shit. Even if I had not just watched Halloween (2018) before watching Halloween Kills, I still do not understand why we need to flashback. Can creators not just be confident in their work? I swear to God, it always feels like studio interference. People are stupid, you gotta lead the horse to water. I was fine with the bits where we went back in time and showed other things happening with those characters. (Particularly with the little detail of using film rather than digital. Or at least using some filters that made it look more like the old days.) It's just when we needlessly flash back to footage of shit we've already seen. Why? Wasted time. Delete.
